Understanding LASIK Surgery

By: Blind Granny LASIK is a vision correction operation. When successful, many people don't need their glasses ever again. This procedure uses a laser to reshape the cornea.

The first step is to check with an eye doctor to see if you qualify for this type of surgery. There are some things that will hurt your chances. One example is if your eyes are unstable. You need consistent vision.

Other reasons you might not be able to use LASIK could be: previous eye surgery, eye injuries, and certain eye diseases, to name a few.

If you decide to go forward, this is what happens. If you wear contact you will be asked to stop using them for a period of time before your surgery. This will vary depending on the type of contacts you use. The reason for this is contacts influence the shape of the cornea.

The day before the procedure you need to quit using any chemicals on your body: makeup, lotions, mascara, etc. This is to control possible infections.

You will be in surgery for about thirty minutes. This is an out patient procedure. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery.

During the surgery you will be asked to focus on a point of light. The ability to do to this, for a minute or so, is required to do the surgery. You will be tested to make sure this won't be a problem.

During the procedure you will not be able to blink to mess anything up. There will be a flap of eye peeled back to expose the part of the cornea to be reshaped. A laser will then vaporize the proper areas that correctly reshape the cornea.

When the surgery is over you will need to protect your eyes from bumping or rubbing for a few days. This is to give the flap that was created time to heal.

You won't want top do any hard contact, like boxing, for at least a month or two. Keeping chemicals out of the eyes is also important. This will help prevent infections.

Many people have had spectacular results with LASIK. People that couldn't see well at all have achieved 20/20 vision. Although this is a relative new field, the results appear permanent.
