Use Herbal Supplements With Caution

By: Kim Archer Many people today are choosing a holistic approach to maintain health - either to avoid the side effects of prescription drugs or to cut medical costs. The sales of herbal supplements in health food stores have increased tenfold from a few years ago. But some have the belief that since they're ingesting natural herbs, they don't have to worry about dosage and use.

Widely touted as the healthy and more natural alternative to synthetic pharmaceutical products, herbal treatments must still be afforded the same respect and care in usage as people give synthetic drugs. You should always be careful about what you choose to put into your body, especially if you are ingesting dangerously large amounts of a substance you know nothing about.

Some people simply use herbal remedies instead of visiting the doctor, and they choose to do so for all of their ailments, whether serious or not. This is not wise, and you should always consult your doctor prior to using any herbal treatments - whether on their own or in conjunction with prescription medication.

Many companies sell herbs off the internet without any verifiable way to back up their claims or even a guarantee that you're receiving the kind of herb you're investing in. You want to only buy from a reputable company that delivers herbs you can trust.

Make sure you're working toward preventative health, and not simply treatments or cures for diseases or ailments you encounter from time to time. Herbal medicine works best when you try to maintain a balance within your body, not when you seek out help solely to fix an immediate problem.

Whenever you buy herbs, you want to know what the plant does and how much you can safely consume of it. If you're on any other medications, you'll want to check with your physician first to determine if you'll have any unsafe interaction between the natural and synthetic medications.

Many herbal companies put directions for use on the package, but some don't. Make sure you know how to take the herb before you try to. Understand the herb's effects and proper dosage before you ingest it yourself. There are usually many websites that offer information about an herb's abilities, so make sure you order the right herb for what's ailing you.

When taking any herbal supplement for the first time, it is always advisable to start by taking small doses, as you might be allergic to it. Continue this for a while and if no negative side effects present themselves, then you can increase your dosage to the recommended level.

Again, remember that just because a medicinal remedy is natural, it doesn't mean it's always safe to use. Herbs, too, are medicinal and they can be dangerous or even deadly if you don't use them right. Read all labels and instructions for use before you take them, and if you have any questions, consult your doctor before you begin.
