Weight Loss Motivation: 4 Rules for Success

By: Kurt Schmitt. Even if you're ready for a dramatic life change, maintaining your weight loss motivation can be a challenge. If you follow a number of rules, however, you'll find renewed motivation as you move toward your goals. We'll discuss four of them below.

Measure progress -- Do you know your personal numbers? Do you know your weight, your measurements, your cholesterol levels and blood pressure? If not, let's start here. Know your weight, but never weigh more than once a week. Ask your doctor to perform lab work and record your information for comparison purposes.

Take your measurements. Measure your chest, waist, hips, thighs, and upper arms and be precise when reading the tape measure. Do this every two weeks and compare your results. A decrease of even a quarter of an inch can make a huge difference in your ability to gauge your success.

Keep a journal -- The next rule for weight loss motivation, and perhaps the most important one, is to keep a journal. Record your weight, your measurements, when and what you eat, and your daily activity.

Use the journal to record interesting weight loss facts that you come across. Record your emotions during the weight loss process. The journal enables you to discover patterns in your behavior and offers encouragement when your motivation wanes.

Research it -- One of the most helpful rules for weight loss motivation is to do your research! Read books about dieting and browse the Internet for appropriate websites. Learn the food pyramid guidelines and be able to recognize proper portion sizes.

Your journal is an excellent spot for you to record the information that you learn. To experience continued motivation, you'll want to review this data often, until it becomes second nature.

Envision the future -- The final rule that we're going to share with you now is that you must have a vision. You probably already have a weight loss goal in mind, but your motivation and ultimate success depend on much more than that! You must regularly visualize the process.

This meditation or reflection must be about the details. Your ultimate weight loss goal of losing 50 pounds isn't a part of this. This is about visualizing the process! What will you need to do on a daily basis to reach your goal?

So there you have it... four of the rules for sustaining your motivation. By following these simple guidelines, you'll dramatically increase your chances of experiencing a successful weight loss journey!
