What One Ought To Know About Acid Reflux Disease

By: Bart R When your doctor is talking about GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), you will more commonly know it as acid reflux disease. This particular health problem is caused by the leaking of liquid formed in the stomach after food has been digested back up in to a person's esophagus.

If this particular condition is left untreated, it can lead to other health issues for the sufferer. The first of which can result in damage to the esophageal lining and this in turn results in it becoming inflamed.

The damage that is caused to a person's esophagus lining with this particular condition is because of the acid and pepsin (enzyme) that will normally stay in a person's stomach. Although the pepsin has caustic properties, which enable it to break down the proteins in the foods we, eat, it is believed the main culprit for the discomfort and pain associated with this particular stomach condition is being caused by the acid in the regurgitated liquid.

Although most people are likely to suffer from some form of acid reflux in their lives, for some the problem can be come extremely severe. If the condition does become chronic then the sufferer will learn how to deal and cope with it for the rest of their lives. They may find that they will need to use treatment continuously in order to keep control over the problem.

For some people who suffer with acid reflux the problem of liquid in the esophagus may occur more at night than in the day. This is because when we are awake (stood up or sitting down) the regurgitated liquid is able to easily flow back in to the stomach through the help of gravity. Also, when awake we are constantly swallowing (even though you may not realize it) and this further helps to force the liquid back down into your stomach where it has come from.

One other reason why the symptoms of acid reflux disease may be more severe at night is because our bodies are not actually producing enough saliva. Throughout the day, our mouths are constantly producing saliva that contains bicarbonate. As you swallow the saliva, you are also swallowing the bicarbonate contained within it and which helps to neutralize any acids that appear in the esophagus.

But at night, the problem of acid reflux disease can be exacerbated, as gravity is no longer able to assist with helping to get the liquid that has been regurgitated back in to the stomach. Also, at night, you stop swallowing and the amount of saliva that your mouth produces is reduced also. So any liquid that has been regurgitated will be able to stay in the esophagus for much longer and so end up causing more damage to its lining.

As mentioned anyone is susceptible to suffering from acid reflux disease, however there are certain people who are more prone to it that others. Some women when they become pregnant will find that in the latter stages of their pregnancy may well suffer from this condition. Also, people who are overweight or obese are also likely to suffer with this particular stomach complaint as well.
