What are Paintballs?

By: Samuel Morhaim Paintballs are small capsules, usually made of gelatin, and filled with dye. They are designed to explode on impact, marking the target with paint inside them- hence the name paintballs. Since the dye isw non-toxic, you don't have to worry about accidentally swallowing it, although I really wouldn't advise it.

There are a number of companies that supply paintballs, which come in a large number of different colors and quantities. While the best paintballs can be expensive, it is always possible to buy cheaper ones of lower quality.

Paintballs come pre filled with a water based paint. Most paintball fields need you to purchase their "field paint", because this is how they earn there money. A lot of fields are now allowing BYOP (bring your own paintballs) for a fee.

The way you intend to use your paintballs will determine which paintballs you buy, as they each have a different thickness of filling. You can see a variety of different paintballs at http://www.sakworldpaintball.com/paintballs.html.

For practical purposes, you are more likely to go for a cheaper product, and quality might not be a top priority. Of course, a tournament ball will need to be the best, and you have to have balls that won't burst in your paintball gun. On the other hand, you need bals that will easily smash into your opponents.

Besides the quality of the ball, you must also think about its size. The ball needs to fit easily into your gun, which means it must be the right calibur for your barrel. All paintballs are .68X, but the final number varies. Most balls these days are .689, however if your local field paint is the wrong size, you might want to consider getting a different barrel for your gun. You can find a variety of barrels available at http://www.sakworldpaintball.com/paintball-barrels.html .

Usually, most paint gun barrels are of .68 calibers. But knowing the exact measure of your paint guns barrel is a pre-requisite for all paintball purchasers. If your ball doesn't fit into your barrel your shell will break and none of the balls will leave your paintball gun in one piece.

Paintball guns themselves come in a number of varieties, like the paintballs themselves. Consider the Ion gun, which has all the standard features you woudl expect, plus is extremely versatile. Think about your level of skill and expertise when choosing a gun, as well as your budget. There's no point having an excellent gun if you can't aim it accurately. If you have a look at http://www.sakworldpaintball.com/paintball-guns-markers.html you will see a list of paintball guns you might be interested in.

Take another look at the Ion gun. It has a 17/sec fire rate, and an automatic fire rate of 10 balls/sec. This alone makes it worthy of consideration, but its price is so low that it could be used for recreational play as well as tournament.
