Why Poker Has Triumphed The World

By: Robo Harrier Poker used to be a truly game played in private, behind closed. Professional poker players would be thought of as con men, or worse. Wow, has that all changed.

Three different events occurred that have created this new world. These three things have combined to change how poker is viewed by the public. It is now big business. Read on to see how this has happened.

Planet poker, in 1998, becomes the first online poker room. Casinos had been online since 1994. With people playing poker in their living room the evolution starts.

We have had poker on television all the way back into the 70's. The coverage was very limited. Small audiences didn't help inspire more coverage.

This would change dramatically, eventually. The second key factor in changing poker is the hole card camera, or "pocket cam". Patented way back in 1994, and was used briefly in Europe in 1997. Once used to it's fullest, this tool revolutionized watching poker on the television.

In 2002 a couple of things happened. The WPT (World Poker Tour) was formed and held tournaments that were recorded and aired the next year. These recording used the pocket cam as a key tool in their shows. Earlier in 2002, ESPN used the pocket cam for the first time on U.S. television while covering the WSOP.

The use of the pocket cam gets more people watching. The fact that the viewer can see what the players have increases the drama, and exposes the strategies. ESPN decides to show a lot more of the event the following year.

For the first time, they will get action from beginning to end, and add air time. Pocket cam will be used even more. What happens in the 2003 WSOP changes the poker scene completely.

The first fully covered WSOP Main Event sees an internet amateur beat 839 players to win the title and $2.5 million. He outlasts many top name pros in the late stages. Chris Moneymaker qualified online for $40 to get his $10,000 seat.

When Chris Moneymaker goes from an unknown, small time, internet poker player, to WSOP Main Event Champion, the poker boom accelerates massively. He gives hope to every player that anyone can win the biggie. The rest is history, and the world has gone poker crazy.

It started with internet poker, the ease and convenience of playing at home. Then the poker cam made watching poker on television exciting. When Chris Moneymaker, wins the biggest tournament in the world, the poker industry booms.
