Wire Rope

By: Barney Garcia So you have thought that wire rope is just another kind of rope? Wire rope is more a machine in nature than an ordinary rope. With its different and more complex construction, wire ropes are the products that depict extra ordinary engineering skills. Wire ropes are the intricate creation of several strands of metal wires skillfully twisted together. In the early years of its inception, wrought iron wires were used to make wire ropes. But this is no longer the case. Steel has replaced the wrought iron as the chief material for producing more advanced kind of modern wire ropes.

Prior to the innovation of wire ropes, mainly the ropes made of hemp or metal chains used to be employed for the important engineering and mining works in the construction, mining and other industries. And naturally their poor performances proved grossly inadequate in every step. This vacuum was filled up as the German mining engineer Wilhelm Albert invented the first wire rope in the first half of 1830’s to use them in the mines of Harz Mountains in Lower Saxony regions of Germany. But its repute soon spread across far and wide and people all over the world took no time to acknowledge that these wire ropes were the most superior kind of fastening device invented so far.

How were the wire ropes in their early years? The early wire ropes were used to be constructed by covering a bundle of wires with hemp. The wire rope that Wilhelm Albert's invented for the first time consisted of wires that were twisted around a hemp rope core. Now six such strands were then taken and twisted around another hemp rope core, but in alternate directions. These kind of special twists were meant for greater stability of the rope.

It was John Roebling who introduced the concept of wire rope in America. His kind of wire rope was made famous by its extensive use in the constructions of suspension bridge building. Roebling had made a number of valuable contributions in improving many constructional aspects of wire rope.

In modern wire ropes, metals are found in their strongest form. A group of strands laid in a special braiding pattern around a core construct the modern wire ropes. Here the strands or cables consisting of a number of individual wires are laid around another central wire. Modern wire ropes are as versatile as possible. They provide you the ideal device to transmit motion through all kinds of surfaces or angles. You can use them to tie down, hold back or to lift things and so on. The best thing about wire ropes is it has a long life and needs little or no maintenance.
