Women's Lacrosse

By: K.L. Amadio For centuries, lacrosse has been a very popular sport, but one mainly for men to partake in. In the past few decades, women have become recognized as viable participants on the lacrosse field. While this event continues to grow for them, it doesn't get the coverage or prestige that comes with the game of lacrosse for men. There are also far fewer women who play lacrosse and spectators for it than with the male counterpart.

Rules are different for women's lacrosse. Women are not allowed to engage in physical contact like the men. While men wear upper body padding, women lacrosse players wear eye protection and mouth guards. Some women choose to wear nose shields. The field of play in women's lacrosse is larger than the men's field aiding the reduction of physical contact between players. Women's sticks differ as well. The pocket of a women's lacrosse stick is shallow compared to the men's stick which makes catching and holding onto the ball more difficult. The lack of pocket depth also keep passed balls from having the speed that men achieve.

A women's lacrosse team has two additional players compared to a men's team. A women's team has three attackmen, three defensemen and the requisite goaltender but unlike the men, they feature five mid fielders. There will be seven members playing attack or defense at a time while the four remaining players and goaltender do not cross the midfield line or risk penalty.

Checking is the most noticeable difference between the men's and women's rules of lacrosse. Women do not check during play and lose control of the ball at the umpire's direction.

Lacrosse continues to be a very interesting sport around the world. Women are now able to play the game professionally, but as you can see the rules have been altered. Some think this is why women's lacrosse has not gotten the recognition that it deserves. They feel unless the rules are the same as for the men, then they will never reach the same popularity status. It doesn't appear that these rules will be changing though any time in the near future.
