Womens Motorcycle Helmets - Stylish and Safe

By: John Daniele. Motorcycle helmets designed for women are more fashion-oriented that those for men. For example, pink and purple are colors usually found in women's motorcycle helmets but would almost never be seen in a man's helmet. All in all, a woman's motorcycle helmet gives out a "fashion statement" more than the simple styles found in helmets for men.

There is a possible hazard with women's motorcycle helmets because safety, not fashion, should be the prime concern for buyers of motorcycle helmets. While manufacturers often rely on sex appeal for their designs, that should be a minor detail on the consumer's side when purchasing a helmet.

It is easy to tell the difference between women's helmets and those designed for men, thanks to the manufacturers. Colors and styles of the helmets are typically gender specific, but the sizing convention is also a clue because women's motorcycle helmet sizes are typically smaller than men's in the same general category.

Since more and more women over the last three decades have been riding motorcycles, women's motorcycle helmets come in so many styles. A woman who wants a trendy and safe helmet need not sacrifice one for the other - she can get both in one helmet. An excellent example of a woman's motorcycle helmet that is both stylish and functional is the Icon Racing's "Hooligan Gloss Helmet." Although the name does not denote femininity, the helmet is shaped unmistakably for a woman and is available in a pink-purple hue. At the same time, this helmet has all the necessary safety features. It meets all the standards set by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Snell; it is made of a fiberglass shell; the dual-density styrene liner in the helmet reduces the risk of head trauma. This helmet is truly both beautiful and functional.

Motorcycle riding is still a male dominated activity, and therefore men are typically more knowledgeable and experienced in helmet purchasing than women. Any first-time buyer should research and educate herself about safety and design features of available helmets before making a purchase. A basic knowledge of D.O.T. and Snell standards is also a good idea since those standards regulate safety features of helmets. Safety, ventilation, heat-flow and other rider comfort aspects should also be researched prior to purchase. Women's motorcycle helmets that maximize facial protection should also be considered to protect the beauty of the female face.
