Yellow Sapphires: The Jewelers Secret

By: Andrew W John Truly spectacular to see, yellow sapphires are one of the rarer members of the sapphire family tree. Like all other sapphires, yellow specimens are crystallized aluminum oxide. The yellow coloring comes from the presence of iron in the crystal in addition to aluminum oxide. They are uncommon enough that until recently years, many were unaware that yellow sapphires even existed!

Playing second fiddle only to the diamond on the Mohs scale (weighing in at 9), all sapphires are extremely hard gems. Yellow sapphires, just like other fancy sapphires are beautiful and rare as they are strong. A yellow sapphire stands up well to wear and tear while losing none of its luster. It has been somewhat easier to find these stones in recent times as they become more popular in jewelry.

The yellow sapphire can be found in sapphire mines in Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Madagascar. While top quality sapphires of all colors are rare, synthetic sapphires are made in the lab all the time. Synthetic sapphires contain all the properties of real sapphires; they were just created in a laboratory instead of in the earth over the course of millions of years. Yellow synthetic sapphires sparkle just as brilliantly as those mined from the earth and they'll be a little more affordable than the real stones.

Price depends on on the color, size and clarity of the gems. The cut of the gem is also an important element in determining price. A stone which has been expertly cut will sparkle, even out of the sunlight. Mined stones will be more expensive than synthetics and stones that have been heat treated (this enhances their color).

There is a lot of folklore surrounding yellow sapphires. Reputed to foster friendship and bring people together, as well as increase mental faculties, bring financial success and treat depression. They are also said to be beneficial to the health of the respiratory system and the liver. Other folklore concerns which hand to wear a yellow sapphire ring on, but these are not generally followed these days.

Whether mounted in silver or in gold, worn in a necklace or a ring, yellow sapphires catch the eye. Possessing all of the elegance and luster of the other members of the sapphire family, they draw attention and garner compliments where ever the wearer goes. For this reason, they are gaining in popularity as a stone for engagement rings.

If your collection of jewelry lacks a yellow sapphire, what are you waiting for? Far too beautiful to do without, and to ignore once you are wearing it, it is a gem which demands attention.
