“Keeping Austin Weird” - a Proud Legacy
“Keep Austin Weird.” The unofficial slogan of the city has different interpretations to different residents, but most would agree that not being “normal” is one of the things we cherish about Austin. Ironically, what began with a grass roots movement to support the local businesses got trademarked by a marketing company to sell tee shirts and ball caps. In fact, they did such a good job of marketing and profiting from that slogan that other marketing companies in other cities picked it up and pretty soon, it became “Keep (fill in the blank) Weird.” But like cookie-cutter malls and chain restaurants that look exactly the same no matter what part of the country you happen to be in, we’ll let the big companies make a profit here just like anywhere else. To a lot of us, “Keep Austin Weird” isn’t about a tee shirt, it’s a reminder that we live in one of the most unique and original cities in the country, and we never want to lose that.

Fiesta San Antonio
Fiesta San Antonio was started as a celebration of Texas heritage and to honor the heroes of the Alamo and battle of San Jacinto. Now, over a hundred years later and with an estimated 3.5 million people in attendance, it is one of the biggest and most energetic celebrations in the state.
A Visit to Austin’s Ethnic Bakeries: A bite-sized tour of the world without leaving town
What do you do when you mix a traveling jones with a sweet tooth? For those with the time and means, a trip around the world probably sounds pretty good. If that’s not practical, you can do the next best thing – stop by one of the little local bakeries and pick up an ethnic treat to go.
Sweets are a traditional part of celebrations in almost every country in the world. Many, if not most of the favorite ethnic desserts we’re all familiar with are steeped in lesser known traditions and cultural heritage. Many of the bakers that own these local shops brought their experience and talent to Texas from other countries, and the culture of their native land is often reflected through the ambience as well as the food. Other shop owners are descendents of immigrants, and the confections they make are based on old family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Either way, we get a little taste of the old country with every bite.
Irish Dining in Austin - From Pub Grub to Dublin Lawyer
One of the many things that make Austin an interesting city is that it has always been a melting pot of different cultures, and many of them are reflected in different ways from the architecture to the surprisingly wide array of restaurants available to the present day diner.
From the Canary Islands to San Antonio – the Origins of Tex-Mex
As Americans, we all share a common bond of nationality. But one of the things that make us unique in the world is that we all have a regional heritage as well, each reflecting the history and culture of the indigenous inhabitants and the old world colonists that settled there. Those regional differences are most obvious in the dialects and cuisine that can change dramatically just by crossing a state border – you can drive from Houston, Texas to Mobile, Alabama in one day, and encounter a distinctly different dialect and entirely different type of menu each time you stop to eat.
Barbecue: The Taste of Texas
When you think Texas Barbecue, you probably are not thinking about eating German and Czech food. The foods that you usually think of are bratwurst and sauerkraut. However, these two cultures influenced the types of foods in central Texas and in fact, there is some dispute about the possibility of these cultures originating what is now known as Texas Barbecue.
Canyon of the Eagles: A Great Place for the whole family to visit.
Nestled in the northern hills of Texas is a place named the Canyon of the Eagles. Located on the shores of Lake Buchanan just 90 minutes north of Austin, it is the home of some of America’s endangered birds including the Bald Eagle. But Eagle watching is not the only thing to do in this place that is packed with adventure.
Catering: What to expect
Over the past few decades, the food service industry has gown tremendously, especially in the area of catering. Food catering is when you provide food at some remote location. Good Bread, Good Meat, Good God, Let's Eat
In a town that bills itself "the live music capital of the world," but in which 87% of the residents claim they don't attend church regularly, perhaps it was inevitable that the storied tradition of religious revivals would find new life in Austin restaurants.

As might be expected in an atmosphere of such serenity, Casa de Luz is refreshingly quiet and peaceful, especially for lunch in the middle of a hectic day. You'll serve yourself and bus your own table; think of it as exercise and you'll be in the proper spirit.
I walked the line
Set amidst the rolling ridgelines of Austin’s arboretum area The County Line (on the lake) proves to be the penultimate Texas barbecue. The restaurant and adjoining patio area sit flush against Bull Creek, which flows into Lake Austin. This is a picturesque place for a pint or a margarita on a sunny summers evening while waiting for your table.
